What is drama education?

Drama in Education(DE) is a unique performance and pedagogical discipline focused on process-oriented theatrical techniques, which is designed to engage a broad spectrum of learners. It is an engaging, theoretically significant, and historically rooted field of inquiry and genre of transdisciplinary practice. The practice of DE occurs not only in schools and classrooms but also increasingly in community spaces and in professional theaters, and with populations of all ages (McAvoy and O’Connor, 2022).

DE encompasses aesthetic methods and theories, theatrical practices, ethical engagements, and pedagogical pursuits, often all at once. When contextualized within the larger applied drama field, DE takes up the explicit goal of learning and teaching through drama, although its pedagogical dimension may take a variety of forms. Moreover, DE now appears not only in various explicitly pedagogical settings like schools, but also in community and arts institutions. Further, as creativity and creative learning modalities increasingly influence discourses and policy initiatives associated with the best practices in twenty-first-century learning and creative economies on global scale for good and ill, DE’s relevance as a worthwhile mode of learner engagement grows increasingly salient (McAvoy and O’Connor, 2022).

In the 1990s, the drama approaches invented by a significant practitioner of the field, Dorothy Heathcote, were organized and published in Dorothy Heathcote: drama as a learning medium (1999). Heathcote suggests four approaches to drama pedagogy, namely Process Drama, Rolling Role, Mantle of the Expert, and the Commission Model (Wagner, 1999).

Why does drama education become increasingly important?

The pedagogy of drama education has come to the fore recent years, especially in the field of language and literature education. It is one of the most effective ways to develop students’ capabilities of expression and creativity. With the encouragement of Education Bureau, local school teachers are encouraged to employ drama as a tool to enhance students’ skills of communication and literature appreciation.

What is Metaverse?

The utilization of Metaverse technologies becomes more popular. It enables creative usage of virtual experiences. Metaverse offers a virtual and novel space for students to continue their drama-learning beyond classroom.

In this virtual space, students can choose their own avatars to participate in a variety of drama activities, such as process drama, character-profiling and rolling role, etc. Students can interact with each other in a virtual-physical form, using voice-over, texting, gesture, and movement to communicate.

Metaverse allows individuals to collectively expand space-time. Participants can create content, regardless of their identity or location.

What students will learn from participating in the activities of the project “Drama Education in Metaverse”?

By participating in the ‘Drama Education in Metaverse’ activities of this project, students’ learning could be enhanced in three different levels, namely operational, cultural and critical level. Moreover, in line with EdUHK’s Generic Intended Learning Outcomes (GILOs), nurturing students’ problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills, creative thinking skills and oral communication skills are also the ultimate goal of this project.

Apart from the courses and workshops of EdUHK, will the activities of this project be held in the classroom of local schools?

In this project, module 4 ‘Teacher-in-Role’ will provide opportunities for EdUHK students to deliver drama education workshops in local secondary schools. Students who participate in this module must be the participants of either module 1 play writing/ module 2 character profiling/ module 3 the appreciation of dramatic literature. They will join workshops organized by EdUHK teachers prior delivering workshops in local schools. A sharing session will be held for participants of Module 4 to exchange experience afterwards.
